The Nereids

Nereids are daughters of the sea god Nereus and the nymph Doris. They are depicted as beautiful young women, who have the power to transform their bodies into other forms. They can ride sea monsters or sea horses and are considered patron deities of the calm sea. Often, in ancient Greece, they are represented with a veil on their heads and half naked. The nereids have prophetic abilities and in the Hellenic representations they are represented as they participate in processions of the sea, in the company of sea horses and whelks.
